There has been a slowdown in the progress of many motorcycle start-ups since the COVID-19 crisis. The Vector electric model is being brought back by Arc. Under the Jaguar Land Rover brand, the Vector was first conceived as an electric motorcycle concept.
Arc founder and CEO Mark Truman took the concept to his own company after finding the prototype too expensive to produce. Despite its debut at EICMA 2018, Vector seemed to deflate amid the pandemic.
With its innovative battery design, Truman believes the Arc is poised to revolutionize the electric motorcycle market. In the future, when electric motorcycles are the only type of motorcycle allowed on the road, we want young kids to say, "Have you seen that battery over there? Look at that battery, isn't it beautiful?" Which might seem strange, but that's what we were aiming for."
In addition to taking 40 minutes to charge, the Arc has a 399V battery with a capacity of 16.8kWh, providing autonomy of 436km and a top speed of 200km/h while doing 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds.
Carbon fiber makes up its swingarm, while Ohlins makes up its suspension, and Brembo makes up its brakes.
In addition to design, Arc strives to improve performance as well. In order to accomplish this, he will designate 10 clients as Arc Angels. The Arc Pilot System's Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology will be developed by the members by participating in track days hosted by Arc.
This is the ultimate behind-the-scenes look for these customers, Truman said. Essentially, they will become part of the development team. They will become test riders. They will be asked to test the system in the closed-loop environment."
As part of the motorcycle-rider interaction, the Arc Zenith helmet functions as a key for the motorcycle (keyless) and shows the rider navigation, speed, and rearview camera notifications (head up display). Similarly, the Arc Origin jacket alerts the user to road hazards with tactile feedback, such as vibrations. In addition to all of that, the Vector's driving performance is its biggest advantage.
"We've had a lot of test riders," Truman continues, "and they say the same thing." It feels a lot smaller than it is in reality, and it turns and changes directions unlike anything else they've ridden. It weighs 235kg, so it's quite a big bike, but it's not."
