Stelvio Pass, one of Italy's most popular mountain passes, was the inspiration for Moto Guzzi's erstwhile Adventure-Tourer. Will he be resurrected soon?
Between 2007 and 2016, the Stelvio was an On/Off motorcycle. Against the then R 1200 GS and KTM 1190 Adventure, the Stelvio faced giants betting on style. Low sales figures, however, led to the Stelvio being discontinued in 2016, "saving" the Euro 4 transition despite its uniqueness.
Until this year, when something interesting comes out of EICMA. A giant screen depicted an eagle flying over the Stelvio Pass in the corner of the brand's booth. In the familiar font, the word 'Stelvio' appeared at the top of the screen. Under the screen were 19- and 17-inch spoked wheels and a not-so-mysterious 'Returning Soon'. What's meowing on the tiles.
Moto Guzzi launched the V100 Mandello in 2022, a technologically advanced sport tourer. Foreign reports report that the upcoming Stelvio will use the same engine as the V100 Mandello.
Therefore, the new Stelvio likely won't compete with the likes of the BMW R 1250 GS or KTM 1290 Super Adventure, but rather a slightly smaller Adventure bike that sits between the middleweight and heavyweight classes.
This is because we remind you that the V-Twin is 1,042cc. With 115 horsepower, Mandello could enter this new adventure tourer. KTM 890 Adventure R and Ducati Multistrada V2 are the likely rivals.
The future will once again show what passes from speculation to reality with all of this and Italian company teasing.
